Summary

U.S. Department of Energy hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions from 125 Hanford Site stacks were assessed. 106 stacks are compliant, with 19 requiring further action under a Federal Facilities Compliance Agreement.

  • Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 61, Subpart H mandates continuous monitoring for stacks with potential exposure >= 1 muSv y-1 to offsite individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess radionuclide emissions from 125 Westinghouse Hanford Company stacks.
  • To ensure compliance with National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP).
  • To estimate potential dose to the maximally exposed individual.

Main Methods:

  • Six U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved methods were used to assess potential unabated radionuclide emissions.
  • The CAP88 code was employed to estimate dose to the maximally exposed individual.
