Consultation on a pediatric surgical ward: creating an empathic climate

Meaningful consultation to a pediatric surgical service must occur within an emotional climate that supports the consultative process. This paper examines the intangible qualities inherent in such a milieu and the consultant's role in structuring an atmosphere in which one's consultative skills can be utilized effectively.
