Summary

This report details a rare case of inherited generalized acanthosis nigricans and vitiligo in a young woman. The skin condition evolved, with hyperpigmentation progressively replaced by depigmentation due to vitiligo.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Genetics
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Acanthosis nigricans (AN) is a skin condition characterized by hyperpigmentation and thickening, often associated with metabolic disorders or inherited conditions.
  • Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder causing depigmentation of the skin.
  • The co-occurrence of inherited AN and vitiligo is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 19-year-old female presented with generalized, inherited acanthosis nigricans since childhood.
  • The characteristic velvety, hyperpigmented lesions evolved into verrucoid papules in body folds.
  • Progressive vitiligo developed, leading to complete depigmentation of the AN lesions.

Findings:

  • This case describes a unique presentation of generalized, pachyderma-like acanthosis nigricans with concurrent vitiligo.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The progression showed a dynamic interplay between hyperpigmentation and depigmentation in the same skin areas.
  • This association has not been previously documented in medical literature.
  • Implications:

    • Highlights a novel association between inherited acanthosis nigricans and vitiligo.
    • Suggests potential shared or interacting pathogenic mechanisms between these distinct dermatoses.
    • Warrants further investigation into the immunological and genetic factors underlying this combined presentation.
