Summary

Right ventricular dysplasia is a myocardial disorder where heart tissue is replaced by fat or fibrous tissue. Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia specifically causes arrhythmias originating from the right ventricle.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pathology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Right ventricular dysplasia (RVD) is a primary myocardial disease.
  • It involves progressive replacement of right ventricular tissue with adipose or fibrous tissue.
  • Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is a subtype characterized by right ventricular arrhythmias.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define and describe right ventricular dysplasia and its arrhythmogenic form.
  • To outline current diagnostic standards and limitations.
  • To discuss the current understanding of etiology and treatment focus.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing literature on right ventricular dysplasia.
  • Discussion of diagnostic tools including right ventricular angiography and endomyocardial biopsy.
  • Consideration of electrophysiological studies for risk stratification.

Main Results:

  • Right ventricular dysplasia presents a spectrum of clinical manifestations due to its polymorphic nature.
  • Right ventricular angiography is the gold standard for diagnosis.
  • Endomyocardial biopsy can aid diagnosis, but a negative result does not rule out RVD.

Conclusions:

  • The etiology of right ventricular dysplasia remains unknown.
  • Electrophysiological studies have generally not aided in risk stratification.
  • Current treatment focuses on preventing potentially lethal right ventricular electrical instability.
