Summary

Preterm birth impairs the development of breathing responses in lambs. Ventilatory responses to low oxygen (hypoxia) and high carbon dioxide (hypercapnia) mature differently after preterm birth compared to full-term birth.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of preterm birth on the postnatal development of ventilatory responses to hypoxia and hypercapnia in lambs.

Main Methods:

  • Hypoxic and hypercapnic rebreathing tests were conducted weekly in preterm and term lambs.
  • Minute ventilation, arterial PO2, and PCO2 were measured.
  • Hypoxic sensitivity was defined as the % increase in ventilation when PaO2 reached 60% of resting values.

  • Preterm lambs showed unchanged hypoxic sensitivity with age.
