Locus of control in behaviourally disordered children

Summary

This study found little connection between locus of control and specific behaviors in children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. These findings suggest caution when using locus of control as a therapeutic tool for this population.

Background:

Children with behavioral disorders are often thought to have an external locus of control.
Previous research has not explored variations within this group regarding locus of control and behavior.
Understanding these differences is crucial for effective intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between specific behaviors and locus of control in children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
To explore intra-group differences within this population.
To inform clinical practice regarding the therapeutic utility of locus of control.

Main Methods:

Utilized cluster analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling.
Analyzed data from 237 children with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Examined the association between various behaviors and locus of control items.

Main Results:

Found minimal correlation between locus of control and specific behaviors.
Cluster analysis and scaling did not reveal strong predictive links.
Individual differences in behavior were not strongly explained by locus of control.

Conclusions:

The therapeutic importance of locus of control for behaviorally disordered children may be overstated.
Clinicians should exercise caution when applying locus of control concepts in therapy.
Further research is needed to understand the complex interplay of factors influencing behavior in this population.
