Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Oncology
  • Feline Medicine
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma is a rare plasma cell malignancy.
  • Hypercalcemia is a common complication in human and canine multiple myeloma.
  • Hypercalcemia has not been previously reported in feline multiple myeloma.

Observation:

  • Two feline patients presented with clinical signs consistent with multiple myeloma.
  • Both cats exhibited concurrent hypercalcemia.
  • Diagnostic workup confirmed multiple myeloma in both cases.

Findings:

  • Treatment with alkylating agents and corticosteroids was initiated for both cats.
  • One cat achieved long-term survival exceeding 16 months.
  • The findings suggest hypercalcemia can occur in feline multiple myeloma.

Implications:

  • This study highlights the potential for hypercalcemia in feline multiple myeloma.
  • Treatment protocols involving chemotherapy may improve outcomes.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the pathophysiology and optimal management of this condition in cats.
