Summary

Fish oil supplementation did not improve kidney function or albuminuria in patients with diabetic nephropathy. This study found no beneficial effects on blood pressure or lipid profiles either.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term efficacy of fish oil supplementation in patients with diabetic nephropathy.
  • To assess the impact of fish oil on key markers of kidney health and cardiovascular risk.

Main Methods:

  • A 1-year, double-blind, randomized controlled trial comparing fish oil (4.6 g n-3 fatty acids/day) with olive oil placebo.
  • Participants included 36 normotensive patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and nephropathy.
  • Measurements included albuminuria, glomerular filtration rate, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure, and lipid profiles every 6 months.

Main Results:

  • No significant changes in albuminuria or glomerular filtration rate were observed in the fish oil group compared to placebo.
  • Fish oil did not significantly alter 24-h ambulatory blood pressure.
  • While serum triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol decreased with fish oil, total and LDL cholesterol increased.

Conclusions:

  • Fish oil supplementation does not appear to offer beneficial effects on albuminuria, kidney function, or blood pressure in normotensive IDDM patients with diabetic nephropathy.
  • The observed changes in lipid profiles suggest potential adverse effects on cholesterol levels.
