Background:

  • Acute subdural hematoma (ASH) is the most common and fatal brain injury in boxing.
  • Understanding the clinical presentation and outcomes of ASH in boxers is crucial for improving patient management.

Observation:

  • This study analyzed 15 boxers with ASH, classifying them into transient, lucid interval, and deterioration types based on consciousness loss.
  • ASH occurred most frequently in 10-round bouts, with a predilection for the left cerebral hemisphere.
  • CT scans revealed subdural hematomas without cerebral contusions in all subjects.

Findings:

  • Transient type (GCS 14-15) had thin hematomas, responded to conservative treatment, and achieved good recovery.
  • Lucid interval and deterioration types presented with thicker hematomas, midline shift, required surgery, and had poorer outcomes, including disability and death.
