Summary

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a scarring hair loss condition affecting postmenopausal women, causing progressive frontotemporal hair recession. While its cause is unknown, the condition appears to be self-limiting, though effective treatments are still needed.

Background:

  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a recently described condition primarily affecting postmenopausal women.
  • It is characterized by a progressive band-like loss of hair at the frontotemporal and parietal scalp margins.

Observation:

  • Two cases of FFA in postmenopausal women are presented.
  • One patient also exhibited vulvar lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, suggesting a potential association.

Findings:

  • Histological examination revealed perifollicular fibrosis and lymphocytic inflammation around the follicular isthmus and infundibulum.
  • The alopecia presents as a symmetrical, scarring band typically 3-6 cm wide.

Implications:

  • Currently, no definitive treatment for FFA is established.
