Summary

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Carcinoid tumors, a type of neuroendocrine tumor, can present atypically, often lacking the classic carcinoid syndrome.
  • Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate management, especially when symptoms mimic surgical emergencies.

Observation:

  • A case of a cecal carcinoid tumor is presented, which did not exhibit the typical symptoms associated with the carcinoid syndrome.
  • The patient presented with intestinal obstruction, necessitating urgent surgical intervention.

Findings:

  • The cecal carcinoid tumor led to an ileocecal valve obstruction, requiring extensive ileocolic resection and ileotransverse anastomosis.
  • The definitive diagnosis of carcinoid tumor was established solely through histopathological examination post-surgery.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering carcinoid tumors in the differential diagnosis of surgical emergencies presenting without classic symptoms.
  • Intraoperative diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention are critical for managing carcinoid neoplasms, which are often less aggressive and amenable to surgical resection.
  • Histopathological examination remains the gold standard for confirming carcinoid tumor diagnosis.
