Cricothyrotomy: the anatomical basis

This study measured the cricothyroid membrane anatomy in cadavers for safe emergency cricothyrotomy (surgical airway). Key dimensions and variations, including transverse arteries, were identified to guide tube placement.

Background:

Cricothyrotomy is a critical surgical intervention for establishing an emergency airway.
Understanding the precise anatomy of the cricothyroid membrane is essential for successful and safe execution.

Purpose of the Study:

To define the anatomical dimensions of the cricothyroid membrane.
To provide clinically relevant data for emergency cricothyrotomy procedures.

Main Methods:

Anatomical measurements of the cricothyroid membrane were performed on 13 adult fresh cadavers.
Vertical and horizontal dimensions, as well as the distance to the vocal cord, were recorded.

Main Results:

The mean vertical measurement of the cricothyroid membrane was 13.69 mm (range 8-19 mm).
The mean width was 12.38 mm (range 9-19 mm).
A transverse artery was present in 62% of subjects, and cricothyroid joint sclerosis in 15%.

Conclusions:

Detailed anatomical data of the cricothyroid membrane are presented to enhance the safety of emergency cricothyrotomy.
Awareness of anatomical variations, such as transverse arteries, is crucial for clinicians.
