Background:

Vocalization is a complex behavior involving intricate neural control.
Studying the neural basis of vocalization often requires animal models.
Previous models faced limitations in isolating neural patterns from motor output.

Purpose of the Study:

To establish a novel animal model for studying fictive vocalization.
To investigate the neural mechanisms underlying vocalization using electrical stimulation.
To compare motor patterns of fictive vocalization with natural vocalization.

Main Methods:

Developed a decerebrate, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated cat model.
Electrically stimulated the periaqueductal grey (PAG) to evoke fictive vocalization.
Recorded and analyzed neural activity in phrenic, abdominal, recurrent, and superior laryngeal nerves.
Compared evoked motor patterns with those during actual vocalization.

Main Results:

PAG stimulation successfully induced fictive vocalization in paralyzed cats.
The induced respiratory and laryngeal motor patterns closely resembled those of natural vocalization.
The transition from inspiration to vocalization-like activity was synchronized with lung inflation.

Conclusions:

Fictive vocalization can be reliably induced by PAG stimulation in a paralyzed cat model.
This model provides a valuable tool for dissecting the neural control of vocalization.
The findings support the role of the PAG in vocal motor pattern generation.
