Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urologic Oncology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) can rarely present as an isolated penile mass.
  • Optimal initial management for penile NHL is not well-established.

Observation:

  • A case of a patient with an isolated penile mass as the sole initial manifestation of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is presented.
  • The patient underwent partial penile amputation as primary treatment.
  • Recurrence in the chest and tonsil occurred one year post-surgery, followed by fatal disseminated disease despite chemotherapy.

Findings:

  • Initial surgical treatment for penile NHL may not prevent systemic recurrence.
  • Chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy may offer better initial control for localized penile lymphoma.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering systemic disease in penile lymphoma presentations.
  • Systemic therapy (chemotherapy/radiotherapy) should be prioritized over surgery for initial management of penile NHL.
  • Surgery may be reserved for refractory cases or local salvage after systemic treatment failure.
