Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Minocycline, a tetracycline derivative, is widely used for persistent acne.
  • Adverse reactions to minocycline have been reported, including rare instances of serum sickness.

Observation:

  • Two new cases of serum sickness reaction to minocycline are presented.
  • Clinical manifestations included erythematous rash, arthropathy, and angioedema in one patient.

Findings:

  • Both patients experienced full recovery following antihistamine and corticosteroid treatment.
  • These cases represent the second and third documented instances of minocycline-induced serum sickness in medical literature.

Implications:

  • Increased minocycline use may lead to more frequent reporting of serum sickness.
  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for serum sickness in patients treated with minocycline.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for favorable patient outcomes.
