Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of rheumatic activity on serum haptoglobin levels in pediatric patients.
  • To compare serum haptoglobin levels in acute rheumatic fever, established rheumatic heart disease, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Serum haptoglobin levels were measured using electrophoresis on cellulose acetate paper.
  • The study included 90 pediatric subjects: 30 with acute rheumatic fever, 30 with established rheumatic heart disease, and 30 healthy controls.
  • ASO titre, C-reactive protein, and ESR were also assessed; haptoglobin and ESR were re-evaluated in rheumatic fever patients after two weeks.

  • Haptoglobin may serve as a useful biomarker for assessing rheumatic activity in pediatric patients.
