Summary

Autoimmune primary biliary cirrhosis involves T-cell responses to pyruvate dehydrogenase complex E2 (PDC-E2). Autoreactive T-cells targeting PDC-E2 are found in patients, suggesting a role in liver disease development.

Background:

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic autoimmune liver disease characterized by biliary epithelial cell damage.
  • T-cell mediated mechanisms are implicated in PBC pathogenesis, evidenced by T-cell infiltrates and activation markers in liver tissue.
  • The E2 component of human pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC-E2) is a key metabolic enzyme.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and role of T-cells specific for PDC-E2 in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.
