Summary

Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) offers advantages over open splenectomy (OS) for spleen removal. This study found LS to be safe, with faster recovery and shorter hospital stays, suggesting it as the preferred method for normal-sized spleens.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Outcomes
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is utilized for various splenic disorders.
  • Direct comparisons between LS and open splenectomy (OS) are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes of laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) versus open splenectomy (OS).
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of LS for splenic disorder treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective comparison of 46 patients undergoing LS (n=26) or OS (n=20).
  • Analysis of operative times, blood loss, pain management, diet, length of stay, and complications.
  • Patient groups were similar in age, sex, and ASA classification.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • LS was successfully completed in all cases.
  • LS had longer operative times initially, but improved with experience.
  • LS patients experienced less pain, faster diet resumption, and shorter hospital stays.
  • Blood loss and complication rates were similar between LS and OS.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is technically safe and offers significant advantages over open splenectomy (OS).
  • LS should be considered the procedure of choice for removing normal or near-normal sized spleens.
