Summary

Microbubble echo contrast agents can cause transient, clinically significant increases in pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance at high doses. Standard doses of active contrast agents show minimal hemodynamic changes in healthy dogs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the dose-related hemodynamic effects of active (bubble-rich) echo contrast agents.
  • To compare these effects with bubble-free agents and saline to isolate the impact of microbubbles.

Main Methods:

  • 13 instrumented dogs underwent open-chest procedures.
  • 492 bolus injections of active contrast (Levovist), bubble-free contrast, and saline were administered at varying doses/volumes.
  • Hemodynamic parameters were measured, and audio Doppler confirmed bubble presence.
