Summary

Histological examination of aluminium injection site reactions reveals a broader range of appearances than previously documented. Pathologists should be aware of these diverse presentations for accurate diagnosis.

Background:

Observation:

  • Four cases of injection site reactions to aluminium were analyzed using routine histology, electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis.
  • Histiocytes containing granular, refractile material confirmed as aluminium were present in all cases.

Findings:

  • Two cases exhibited typical inflammatory responses with lymphoid follicles and eosinophilic infiltrates.
  • Two cases presented with unusual features: a sclerosing lipogranuloma-like reaction and diffuse subcutaneous lymphoid infiltration.

Implications:

  • This study expands the known spectrum of histological findings in aluminium injection site reactions.
  • Awareness of these diverse reactions is crucial for accurate pathological diagnosis and patient management.
