Summary

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is common in the lungs of burn patients, strongly linked to adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Early detection of pulmonary HSV in burn victims may improve outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of pulmonary herpes simplex virus (HSV) in burn patients.
  • To investigate the association between HSV lung infection and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or pneumonia.
  • To compare diagnostic methods for detecting HSV in lung tissue.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathological analysis of lung tissue using Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining.
  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HSV deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) on a subset of samples.

    • 50% of burn patients showed HSV positivity via IHC, compared to 0% in controls.

    • PCR results were potentially limited by postmortem tissue necrosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Pulmonary herpes simplex virus infection is highly prevalent in burn patients.
    • Pulmonary HSV is strongly associated with ARDS, suggesting a potential causal link.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary HSV in burn patients may reduce mortality and lung complications.
