Abstract:
A thorough knowledge of applied anatomy is essential for the success of surgical techniques: the operator uses this knowledge by taking advantage of recognized structures to aid a procedure or to avoid complications. Of all the facial bones, the mandible is the largest and toughest, and exploitation of its anatomy has lead to the development of better techniques for diagnosis and treatment. This article describes how this has come about.
