Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Isolated sphenoid sinus disease presents diagnostic challenges.
  • Headache is the most common symptom, but not pathognomonic.
  • Endoscopic techniques offer an alternative to traditional approaches.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of rigid endoscopic sphenoidotomy.
  • To review outcomes for patients with isolated sphenoid sinus disease.
  • To analyze pathological findings and treatment results.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 21 patients with isolated sphenoid sinus disease.
  • Diagnosis confirmed by history, rigid nasal endoscopy, and CT scan.
  • Surgical treatment via rigid endoscopic sphenoidotomy through the natural ostium.

Main Results:

  • Infection was the most common pathological finding (11 patients).
  • Other findings included cysts, polyps, mucocoele, and inverted papilloma.
  • Excellent surgical outcomes were achieved with minimal blood loss and reduced morbidity.

Conclusions:

  • Rigid endoscopic sphenoidotomy is a safe and effective treatment for isolated sphenoid sinus disease.
  • The procedure is associated with reduced operating time and short hospitalization.
  • Endoscopic sphenoidotomy provides significant benefits over traditional methods.
