Summary

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) specifically uses the natural tRNA(Lys3) primer for DNA synthesis. This specificity is lost when the primer is extended, suggesting early initiation of reverse transcription in virions.
