    Summary

    Clonidine, an alpha-adrenergic agonist, may improve Tourette's syndrome (TS) symptoms in children. This suggests central noradrenergic function plays a role in the neurodevelopmental disorder.

    Background:

    • Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder.
    • TS is characterized by motor tics, phonic tics, and behavioral symptoms.

    Observation:

    • Some children with TS show improvement with low-dose clonidine, even if unresponsive to haloperidol.
    • Clonidine is an alpha-adrenergic agonist.

    Findings:

    • Clonidine is presumed to work by inhibiting central noradrenergic pathways.
    • Metabolic and clinical data indicate involvement of monoamines (noradrenaline, dopamine, serotonin) in TS.

    Implications:

    • Findings suggest noradrenergic system modulation as a therapeutic target for TS.
    • Further research into monoamine involvement in TS pathophysiology is warranted.
