Background:

  • Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the small intestine.
  • Meckel's enteroliths are a rare complication, presenting as calcified masses within the diverticulum.
  • These stones can cause significant gastrointestinal symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic characteristics of Meckel's enteroliths.
  • To highlight their significance as a cause of abdominal symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of eight surgical cases of Meckel's diverticulum with enteroliths.
  • Analysis of abdominal radiographs, barium studies, medical records, and pathology reports.

Main Results:

  • Eight patients (10% of Meckel's diverticulum cases) had enteroliths, with a median age of 45.
  • All patients were symptomatic, often chronically. Radiographs detected enteroliths in 88% of cases.
  • Enteroliths averaged 3 cm, appearing as peripheral calcified or laminated stones. One case presented with small-bowel obstruction.

Conclusions:

  • Meckel's enteroliths are uncommon but important to recognize.
  • Consider Meckel's enteroliths in the differential diagnosis for abdominal calcifications in adults with chronic abdominal pain or GI bleeding.
