Summary

High homocysteine levels are significantly linked to deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients experiencing symptoms. This study found a 2.6 times higher odds of DVT in individuals with hyperhomocysteinemia.

Background:

  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) is a significant clinical concern.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between fasting total homocysteine levels and the presence of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) in symptomatic outpatients.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study was conducted on 208 outpatients suspected of having a first episode of lower limb DVT.
  • Fasting total homocysteine levels were measured.
  • Contrast venography was used to confirm or exclude DVT.

Main Results:

  • DVT was confirmed in 60 patients (28.8%).
