Summary

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta 2) are implicated in subglottic stenosis (SGS) fibrotic processes. These growth factors, along with epidermal growth factor (EGF), may play a role in the pathology of SGS.

Background:

  • Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a complex condition often leading to airway obstruction.
  • The fibrotic mechanisms underlying SGS, particularly the role of growth factors, require further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and role of key fibrogenic peptides in subglottic stenosis.
  • To compare growth factor deposition in patients with different types of SGS and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis of biopsy specimens from SGS patients (post-intubation and idiopathic) and controls.
  • Assessment for epidermal growth factor (EGF), platelet-derived growth factor-AA/BB (PDGF-AA/BB), transforming growth factor-beta 1/2 (TGF-beta 1/2), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF).

  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF) may also contribute to SGS, warranting further investigation into its synergistic role with TGF-beta and PDGF.
