This study found no significant bacterial presence in middle ear fluid of children with chronic secretory otitis media (CSOM), contrasting with previous research. Findings suggest contamination may explain prior positive bacterial cultures in CSOM cases.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the bacterial presence in middle ear effusions of children diagnosed with CSOM.
  • To compare bacterial findings in a local pediatric population with existing international literature.

Main Methods:

  • Bacteriological analysis of middle ear samples from 94 children with clinical and tympanometric CSOM diagnoses.
  • Gram staining and culture on MacConkey and blood agar media.
  • Antibiograms performed if bacteria were identified (Mueller Hinton medium).
