Abstract:
Pregnant women are weighed routinely during antenatal care despite evidence suggesting that an individualised approach would be preferable. Individualised patient care is the aim of all midwives. Only by investigating ritualistic practices such as weighing will midwives move closer to their main goal. With the relevant evidence, they can evaluate their practice and stimulate discussion around this. Before measurement of maternal weight can be critically evaluated, current practices regarding the issue need to be examined.
