Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Parasitology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Hydatid disease of the liver requires early surgical intervention.
  • Comprehensive diagnostic workup is essential for timely treatment.
  • Radical surgery, involving complete cyst and capsule resection, is the primary therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of radical surgery for liver hydatid disease.
  • To determine the optimal treatment strategy combining surgery and medical therapy.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 95 patients with hydatid disease received combined surgical and medical treatment.
  • Follow-up was conducted for patients presenting from 1985 onwards.
  • Treatment involved radical cyst resection and benzoimidazole drugs.

Main Results:

  • No mortality was observed.
  • Minor complications like pyrexia, cholangitis, and pleuritis were successfully managed with antibiotics.
  • No relapses occurred, with one case showing only serological evidence of reappearance.

Conclusions:

  • Radical surgery is the most effective treatment for echinococcus cystic disease of the liver.
  • Combining surgery with pre- and post-operative benzoimidazole therapy yields optimal results.
  • A consistent approach of surgical treatment preceded and followed by benzoimidazole antihelminthics is recommended.
