Summary

Increased gamma band (30-50 Hz) activity in EEG correlates with perceptual switching during ambiguous pattern viewing. This gamma band enhancement, particularly in frontal areas, is linked to the destabilization of the perceptual system.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Psychophysics

Background:

  • Perceptual ambiguity can lead to dynamic shifts in conscious experience.
  • Gamma band oscillations (30-50 Hz) are implicated in various cognitive functions, including perception and attention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between gamma band activity and perceptual reversals in response to ambiguous stimuli.
  • To determine if increased gamma band activity is associated with the "reversal phase" of multistable perception.

Main Methods:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to record brain activity in 11 subjects.
  • Multistability was induced using the stroboscopic alternative motion (SAM) pattern.
  • EEG data were collected during spontaneous activity, naive observation, and active observation of the SAM stimulus.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A significant increase in gamma band activity (30-50 Hz) was observed during perceptual switching (reversal states).
  • The most pronounced gamma band enhancements (40-50%) occurred in frontal areas during both naive and active SAM observation compared to baseline.
  • Multistable perception is associated with a widespread 40 Hz enhancement across the cortex.

Conclusions:

  • Increased frontal gamma band activity is linked to the destabilization of the perceptual system when viewing multistable patterns.
  • Gamma band enhancement is a neural correlate of perceptual switching during the observation of ambiguous stimuli.
