p53 protein expression in gastrointestinal lymphomas (GIL) was investigated. While not linked to clinical factors, p53 expression may indicate a poorer prognosis and lower chemotherapy response in GIL patients.

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal lymphomas (GIL) are a diverse group of lymphoid malignancies.
  • The role of p53 protein expression as a prognostic marker in GIL is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of p53 protein in gastrointestinal lymphomas.
  • To determine the correlation between p53 expression and clinicopathological features and treatment outcomes in GIL.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry using the avidin-biotin complex method was performed on 52 paraffin-embedded GIL samples.
  • p53 protein expression was assessed and correlated with clinical stage, disease localization, tumor burden, histopathological grade, and treatment response.

  • p53 protein expression was detected in 17.3% (9/52) of GIL samples.
  • No significant relationship was found between p53 expression and clinical characteristics (stage, localization, tumor burden).
  • p53 expression showed a trend towards association with higher histopathological grades and younger patient age, but complete remission rates were lower in patients expressing p53.

Conclusions:

  • p53 protein expression in GIL may serve as a potential indicator of a poor prognosis.
  • The observed lower response rate to chemotherapy in p53-expressing GIL patients warrants further investigation.
