Summary

The high-intensity zone on MRI did not correlate with pain during awake discography in patients with low back pain. However, a normal disc never showed a high-intensity zone.

  • Discogenic pain evaluation is challenging.
  • The high-intensity zone (HIZ) on MRI is a potential indicator for painful disc segments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if HIZ on MRI correlates with pain during awake discography.
  • To investigate the association between HIZ and concordant pain response.

Main Methods:

  • 29 low back pain patients underwent MRI to detect HIZ in the posterior anulus.
  • Patients subsequently had awake discography with CT, assessed by the Dallas Discogram Scale.
  • Chi-square analysis evaluated HIZ presence against disc disruption and pain response.
