Summary

Spironolactone therapy reduced hair width in prepubertal girls with simple hypertrichosis. While effective short-term, hair growth tended to increase after 6-9 months, indicating a need for further research on this anti-androgen treatment.

LONG-TERM THYROID DISORDERS IN CHILDREN RECEIVING ONCOLOGIC TREATMENT AND RADIOTHERAPY.

Background:

  • Simple hypertrichosis, though benign, causes cosmetic distress in children.
  • Abnormalities in androgen metabolism are increasingly implicated in hypertrichosis etiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of spironolactone, an anti-androgen, in treating simple hypertrichosis in prepubertal girls.
  • To assess changes in hair width following spironolactone therapy.

Main Methods:

  • 12 prepubertal girls with idiopathic hypertrichosis received oral spironolactone (25-100 mg/m²/day) for 1 year.
  • Hair width (total and medullary) was measured from various body areas before and during treatment.
  • Hormonal levels, bone age, and imaging were assessed to rule out underlying pathologies.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in total hair width were observed in preauricular and anterior midthigh regions up to 6-9 months.
  • Medullary hair width decreased significantly in all measured regions within 6 months.
  • Both measures showed a tendency to increase after the initial 6-9 month period. No adverse effects were reported.

Conclusions:

  • Spironolactone demonstrates potential as a treatment for simple hypertrichosis in children.
  • Further research is required to establish long-term efficacy and safety of anti-androgen therapy for hypertrichosis.
