Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Toxicology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Organic solvents in thinners can damage neuronal and glial cell membranes.
  • Optic neuropathy is a known risk for workers exposed to thinners.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate neurophysiologic signs of visual damage in thinner abusers.
  • To identify central nervous system alterations in individuals with thinner abuse history.

Main Methods:

  • Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were used.
  • 34 thinner abuser patients and 30 healthy controls were studied.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in P-100 wave latency was observed in thinner abusers compared to controls.

  • This finding suggests subclinical visual pathway damage.
  • Conclusions:

    • Thinner abuse is associated with neurophysiologic evidence of visual damage.
    • Central nervous system alterations may occur in thinner abusers, even in the absence of clinical symptoms.
