Summary

Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a complication of chronic alcohol abuse, can lead to dementia. Even after initial recovery, repeated episodes may result in a poor long-term prognosis.

Background:

  • Marchiafava-Bignami disease (MBD) is a rare neurological complication associated with chronic ethanol intoxication.
  • MBD can present with diverse clinical courses, ranging from acute, fatal outcomes to progressive dementia or even favorable recoveries.
  • Acute worsening and partial recovery can occur during the course of chronic MBD.
