Summary

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) from intrauterine devices can cause rare multiple liver abscesses. Prompt combined therapy led to recovery in two reported cases.

Background:

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious complication of intrauterine device (IUD) use.
Hepatic abscesses are collections of pus in the liver, rarely associated with PID.
This study investigates a rare complication of IUD-associated PID.

Observation:

Two patients presented with non-specific symptoms for a prolonged period.
Both patients had multiple hepatic abscesses.
The underlying cause was identified as severe pelvic inflammatory disease secondary to intrauterine device use.

Findings:

Klebsiella pneumoniae was isolated in the first case.
Fusobacterium necroforum was identified as the causative agent in the second case.
Both patients demonstrated a favorable outcome following combined operative and medical management.

Implications:

Highlights the potential for severe, uncommon complications arising from IUDs.
Emphasizes the importance of considering PID in the differential diagnosis of hepatic abscesses.
Suggests that prompt, combined therapeutic approaches are effective in managing this rare condition.
