Psychological stress activates bladder mast cells, potentially contributing to interstitial cystitis symptoms. Sensory neuropeptides appear to mediate this stress response in bladder mast cells.

Background:

  • Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic condition causing urinary urgency, frequency, and pain, often exacerbated by stress.
  • Bladder mast cells are implicated in IC pathophysiology, but the link to psychological stress was unclear.
