Summary

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) causes minimal handicap, with quality of life scores improving post-treatment. These findings suggest BCCs may be underestimated, impacting patient health-seeking behaviors.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most prevalent skin cancer, with rising incidence.
  • Understanding the impact of BCC on patients' lives is crucial for resource allocation.
  • Current knowledge regarding the handicap associated with BCC is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify the handicap experienced by patients with BCC before and after treatment.
  • To assess the impact of BCC on quality of life using validated instruments.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 44 patients with 48 BCCs was recruited.
  • Patients completed the UK Sickness Impact Profile (UKSIP) and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) at baseline, 1 week post-treatment, and 3 months post-treatment.
  • Data on lesion characteristics (duration, size, site) were recorded.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Quality of life scores were low at presentation, increased temporarily after treatment, and fell below baseline at 3 months.
  • No correlation was found between lesion size and quality of life scores.
  • Mean UKSIP scores: 0.4% (baseline), 0.7% (1 week), 0.13% (3 months).
  • Mean DLQI scores: 5.3% (baseline), 8.7% (1 week), 1.2% (3 months).

Conclusions:

  • Basal cell carcinomas cause minimal handicap to patients.
  • The low perceived handicap may contribute to delays in seeking medical attention.
  • Public health education strategies for BCC should consider this minimal impact.
