Summary

Ventilatory and lactate thresholds help determine sustainable exercise intensity. However, only heart rate and VO2 at the ventilatory threshold reliably indicate highest work intensity during prolonged exercise.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if ventilatory threshold intensity is sustainable during prolonged high-intensity exercise.

  • Fifteen healthy males underwent a VO2max test and a 90-minute high-intensity ergocycle test.
