Summary

Immature erythroid cells express cytokine genes that regulate immunity. These findings reveal novel roles for erythroid cells in immune system development and function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate cytokine gene expression in erythroid progenitor cells.
  • To determine if immature erythroid cells produce immunoregulatory cytokines.

Main Methods:

  • Isolation of erythroid colonies from mouse bone marrow and spleen precursors.
  • Reverse transcription-Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect cytokine mRNA expression.

Main Results:

  • Erythroid cells from phenylhydrazine-treated mouse bone marrow expressed IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, GM-CSF, gamma-IFN, and TGF-beta.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Erythroid cells from newborn mouse spleen expressed IL-1 alpha, IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, and GM-CSF, but not gamma-IFN or TGF-beta.
  • No detectable IL-2, IL-3, or IL-5 mRNA was found in these erythroid cells.
  • Conclusions:

    • Immature erythroid progenitor cells express mRNAs for several immunoregulatory cytokines.
    • These findings suggest a role for erythroid cells in immune regulation.
