Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Neurology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Tongue cancer treatment often involves chemotherapy.
  • Cisplatin and pirarubicin are common chemotherapeutic agents.
  • Chemotherapy-induced seizures are a potential adverse effect.

Observation:

  • A 49-year-old male patient developed partial seizures after two courses of cisplatin and pirarubicin chemotherapy for tongue cancer.
  • Seizure manifestations included transient motor aphasia, tonic finger movement, and loss of consciousness.
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG) revealed frequent diffuse spike and slow wave discharges.

Findings:

  • Administration of carbamazepine and diazepam resulted in the cessation of seizures.
  • Post-treatment EEGs showed no recurrence of paroxysmal discharges.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The combination therapy was effective in managing chemotherapy-induced seizures.
  • Implications:

    • Carbamazepine and diazepam are effective in managing cisplatin and pirarubicin-induced seizures.
    • This case highlights the importance of monitoring for neurological adverse effects during chemotherapy.
    • Early intervention with anticonvulsant medication can prevent seizure recurrence and improve patient outcomes.
