Background:

Assessing communication skills in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) individuals is crucial for educational and vocational success.
The Language Background Questionnaire (LBQ) is a tool used to gather information on language experiences.
Validating self-assessment tools against objective measures is essential for reliable data collection.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between self-assessed communication skills (sign and spoken language) using the LBQ and formal assessments in DHH young adults.
To determine the criterion validity of the LBQ for measuring sign language and spoken communication abilities.

Main Methods:

Participants: Young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Data Collection: Administered the Language Background Questionnaire (LBQ) for self-assessment of sign and spoken language skills.
Comparison: Correlated LBQ self-assessments with formal, independent assessments of sign and spoken communication skills.
