Autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses are specific to basic emotions. Combining electrodermal, thermovascular, and respiratory measures uniquely identified happiness, surprise, anger, fear, sadness, and disgust.

Area of Science:

  • Psychophysiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Human Emotion Research

Background:

  • The specificity of autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to different emotional stimuli remains a key question in psychophysiology.
  • Understanding these physiological correlates is crucial for diagnosing and treating emotional disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to basic emotions are specific.
  • To identify unique physiological patterns associated with happiness, surprise, anger, fear, sadness, and disgust.

Main Methods:

  • Six basic emotions were induced using randomly presented slides.
  • Six ANS parameters were recorded: skin conductance, skin potential, skin resistance, skin blood flow, skin temperature, and respiratory frequency.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data were analyzed using Friedman variance analysis and two-by-two comparisons of various electrodermal, thermovascular, and respiratory indices.
  • Main Results:

    • Electrodermal responses (EDR) distinguished 13 out of 15 emotion pairs, with skin resistance and conductance indices showing higher discrimination than conductance amplitude.
    • Skin potential analysis differentiated specific emotion pairs based on pattern and sign.
    • Thermo-vascular and respiratory measures collectively distinguished 14 out of 15 emotion pairs, with a new non-oscillatory duration index for skin blood flow showing promise.

    Conclusions:

    • While no single ANS parameter or limited group of parameters could distinguish all emotions, the combined analysis of electrodermal, thermovascular, and respiratory responses revealed specific autonomic patterns for each of the six basic emotions.
    • This study provides evidence for the specificity of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity during emotional experiences.
