Summary

A lung mass resolved spontaneously, revealing eosinophilic infiltration and high immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels, suggesting allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. Early corticosteroid treatment is recommended for this lung condition.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Routine chest imaging identified an unexpected mass shadow in the left lung of a 35-year-old male.
  • The case highlights potential diagnostic challenges in identifying non-neoplastic lung lesions.

Observation:

  • Transbronchial lung biopsy showed significant eosinophilic infiltration in the bronchial mucosa and alveolar septum.
  • Elevated total serum IgE and positive skin tests/precipitating antibodies to Aspergillus were noted.

Findings:

  • The lung mass resolved spontaneously without intervention, leaving a residual cystic lesion.
  • Eosinophilic inflammation, indicated by high IgE and positive Aspergillus serology, was the likely cause of the transient lung mass.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case suggests allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) can present as a transient lung mass.
  • Prompt administration of corticosteroids is crucial for managing eosinophilic lung diseases and preventing tissue damage.
