Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Addiction Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Adolescents and young adults exhibit high rates of alcohol and drug use in the U.S.
  • The CAGE questionnaire is a common screening tool for problem drinking and alcohol dependence.
  • Previous research suggests the CAGE may be ineffective for identifying substance abuse in young people, particularly young women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the predictive power of the CAGE questionnaire for identifying alcohol-related problems in college students.
  • To compare the CAGE's effectiveness against other common assessment indicators for youthful substance abuse.
  • To investigate the interaction between gender and CAGE scores in predicting alcohol abuse.

Main Methods:

  • A study was conducted on a sample of college students.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The predictive power of the CAGE questionnaire was assessed.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used, including gender as a variable.
  • Main Results:

    • The CAGE questionnaire demonstrated weak predictive power for alcohol-related problems in the studied college student sample.
    • The CAGE showed a particular lack of predictive strength for identifying alcohol abuse problems in college women.
    • Gender was found to be a significant factor in the CAGE's effectiveness.

    Conclusions:

    • The CAGE questionnaire is not a reliable tool for screening alcohol-related problems in college students, especially women.
    • There is a need for improved substance abuse assessment strategies for young populations.
    • Gender differences must be considered in the development and application of substance abuse screening tools.
