Abstract:
Orthotopic cardiac transplantation is an excellent palliation for endstage cardiac failure in select patients. Individual patients may benefit from heterotopic cardiac transplantation. Since 1986 88 patients received an orthotopic or heterotopic transplant at Charité University Hospital. 83% one year-survival and 58% nine years-survival rates were achieved. Infection is a leading cause of death in patients after cardiac transplantation. Due to persistent scarcity of donor organs we have to consider alternative surgical methods as there are dynamic cardiomyopathy, and the chronic conventional surgery, and the chronic use of mechanical circulatory assist systems.
