    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Clinical Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with varied clinical presentations.
    • Understanding the epidemiology of psoriasis is crucial for patient management and public health strategies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the demographic and clinical characteristics of 162 psoriasis patients.
    • To identify patterns in age of onset, familial occurrence, and common sites of involvement.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 162 psoriasis patients' data.
    • Data collection included patient demographics, age of onset, family history, clinical features, and treatment outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • A male preponderance was observed (2.5:1 ratio), with males having a higher mean age of onset (31.44 years) compared to females (25.73 years).
    • Over half of patients were in their 3rd to 4th decade; two-thirds experienced onset before 30. Familial occurrence was noted in 13.6%.
    • Scalp and extremities were common sites; 74% had nail changes. Worsening in colder months occurred in only 25%. Psoriatic arthropathy was rare.

    Conclusions:

    • Psoriasis exhibits a male predominance and typically begins before age 30, with females experiencing an earlier onset.
    • Nail involvement is highly prevalent in psoriasis patients, whereas psoriatic arthritis is infrequent.
    • Clinical presentation varies, with scalp and extremity involvement common and seasonal exacerbations less frequent than traditionally suggested.
