Background:

  • Declining breast self-examination (BSE) practice in women over 55 reduces early breast cancer detection chances.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between social support and the frequency and accuracy of BSE among women aged 55 and older.
  • To determine if diminished social networks affect BSE practices in older women.

  • A sample of 22 women aged 55+ undergoing routine gynecologic exams were studied.
  • The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire assessed social support.
  • Two tools measured the frequency and accuracy of BSE practice.

  • Social support showed a significant positive correlation with BSE frequency (r = 0.45, p < 0.05).
  • No significant relationship was found between social support and BSE accuracy (r = 0.28).
